You're absolutely right
as many who talk the talk will not be walking the walk. I'd go as far as to say that most will accede to the wishes of Microsoft and move to Windows 7. What I do see, however, is that the sheep are getting nervous, and a few more are shying away from the upgrade; many more than those who did not want to move from Windows 2000 to XP.

There are distinct differences with the movement from 2000 to XP and XP to Vista or 7. Vista and 7 do not bring any new technologies to the table, save for the yet unknown 'touch' features of 7.

While those who did not want to move in 2001 were simply viewed as Luddites, those who aren't switching to Vista or 7 are looked upon as prudent, monetarily conservative, and unwilling to change for the sake of change. No matter how many things you and others publish concerning apocryphal performance increases, these increases have yet to be subjectively seen by many. Until that time, the core group of holdouts will grow larger.

As someone who has always been first in line to upgrade, I am totally unwilling to change to Vista or 7 (after using both, and working on other's machines), and I await a return to the path of normalcy with Windows 8. If 2014 happens, and it does not come, I certainly think that some flavor of Linux or BSD will work enough like XP (with updates to support newer hardware) to make the switch easy.

The return to normalcy I speak of is what was originally promised, long ago, with Vista - those changes, instead of the emperor's new clothes, will go a long way toward making me switch.
