Apple has some distinctives beyond style that help sell it's overpriced systems. For starters, they have the venerable OS. While I am not a Mac user (too cheap) having a Unix base makes the Mac attractive to me. Also, there is the whole user interface that attracts many users to the overpriced notebooks.

This move by Dell is going to flop. You can't sell underpowered equipment at a specialty price when your only distinctive is style. You need something more than style.

Dell needs to sell Win 7 with special software package and/or fancier hardware that makes a user willing to pay for this style. Style alone is not enough; at least it won't be enough to start with. (At some point, when the brand is a style, you could get away with it, but you need perception supporting the style before you can sell on style alone.)
