Would his OS allow this?

I thought XP and up would have a fit if you made too many hardware changes, and if you replaced a motherboard...well, just add another $200 or so for Vista, just to slow everything down again! Of course, if he was in China, he could get a copy of Vista for $5 thanks to Mr. Gates...

The smarter upgrade would be to install Linux as your primary OS, and run Windows in VirtualBox for those windows only apps he needs. His machine would run faster, with less worries about malware. It's the better upgrade.
