Windows 7 vs Linux
...When I try to pay my phone bill at AT&T, I have to use Internet Explorer to use account manager and pay the bill. I just found out that my Auto insurance with GMAC has the same problem....

Which means absolutely nothing. I run Mandriva 2009 Powerpack with KDE4.1.3 and have NO problems at all doing on line banking, bill paying, shopping, etc. BTW, my auto insurance is GMAC too.... and I don't use WINE or CrossOver.

GNOME, by design, is a "dumb downed" interface, and lacks the integrated power of KDE4.

However, you are right that there are good reasons to keep Windows around. The primary reason is that some applications have no acceptable counterparts in Linux and thus require Windows in either dual boot or as a guest OS under VB. I've found that VISTA is just a slower version of XP but with worthless "security" dialogs getting in the way. On my new core 2 2.26Ghz 3 GB RAM laptop, however, it seems reasonably fast. (XP on my old single core 3.0Ghz 4 GB of RAM laptop is faster!).

That aside, my biggest problem with Adrian's test is that it begs two questions:

1) IF, as most Microsoft fanbois seem to assert, there is nothing wrong with VISTA, why is Microsoft working so hard to replace it ASAP?

2) And, prior to the release of VISTA there were dozens and dozens of these "benchmarks" published by various journalists and techies extolling performances and capabilities of VISTA that never appeared in the final release. Some journalists even accepted expensive gift laptops to guarantee favorable reviews after VISTA was released, until an ethical journalist blew the whistle. But, this PRE-BETA hype of Windows 7 is exactly what Microsoft did with VISTA and its purpose is the same: to keep the deer frozen in the "headlights" until the truck can turn them into roadkill. The brighter the headlights the closer the truck appears to the deer. The deer is the consumer. The hype is the bright lights, but no guarantee that the final product will shine as brightly, and the purpose is to prevent the consumer from moving to Mac or Linux. But, as they say in investing, past performance is no guarantee of future performance. IF Microsoft couldn't write a good VISTA in the time it gave itself, how can they write a good W7 in even less time? It doesn't look good.
