One thing I found (which maybe everyone else already knew), and I don't know if it is common to all BIOS versions or just the ASUS KV8 that I have, but under the Advanced tab, there's a Legacy USB support option - having it set to auto or on will cause the system to hang on boot if any drives are connected to a USB port, including memory card readers or flash drives.
