Possible workaround
I am also new to Ubuntu, although I have used early RedHat versions on a server. But Ubuntu is based on the Debian Linux release which uses a different package manager (aptitude) than Redhat's RPM. If you cannot find an apt-get compatible package, you may be able to convert the '.rpm' package into an '.apt' package using a tool named 'alien'. I found some info on this at http://blog.intelligrape.com/?p=5
There is also a version of yum that may or may not work depending on the version of Ubuntu you use. There happens to be a bug in current yum's need (if using Ubuntu 8.04) for a particular python version. When the community makes available an apt-get version of each package, your access to adding programs should be easier. Unfortunately, my opinion is that the fragmentation of Linux caused by so many disparate versions and distros makes for a less than joyous experience for new Linux users. Also, since I am running Ubuntu 8.04 on an AMD 64 install, some packages just do not provide a version for that (Adobe's flash, for instance). But keep at it. I have been pleased with the user experience of the things in Ubuntu that seem to work flawlessly. For instance, connecting up my Ubuntu computer to my home network to access my Windows printer from the Ubuntu computer using Samba worked so easy, I was totally surprised.
