What It Will Do
The iPhone need not completely subvert the DS to have a
profound effect. First is the notion that adults would rather
be seen with a iPhone than a DS. Second, this is the device
that you have on your person at all times. It is not meant
to replace the DS, but is capable of stealing hours from the
use of other devices and that includes all other time sinks.
If it becomes desirable, ubiquitous, and the most
convenient access to casual gaming, it steals revenue from
PSP, PS3, DS, other cells, and the XBox 360. The iPhone is
quite capable of preventing Microsoft from coming up with
a 360 portable.

iPhone is the game machine that also happens to be a:
phone
answering machine
typewriter
camera
im client
mapping device
movie player
web surfer
photo gallery
iPod
contact manager
email client
game platform
carpenter's level

the list will go on and on and on.

The DS will never have a hope of being that high
functioning. Is the iPhone the first device to act as a
personal butler? No. Will it redefine and dominate the
space? Lets see.

It's not for pre-teens. Dedicated functionality goes both
ways. It's already attracted major game developers.
Thousands of apps and a huge ecosystem get a start on
Tuesday. This is an adult's communication device and it's
impact will be far greater than a toy fad. And yes, it just
might cost a tad more. Go figure?

So will it replace your DS? Sadly, no not entirely, all you 35
year-olds are still going to have to pack along a DS with
Nintendogs and Mario Bros. All the iPhone will do is
replace your phone, laptop, iPod, portable movie player,
and your PDA

What is this? Kindergarten? Let's try to keep things in
perspective people.
