The weakest link is AT&T's network
It doesn't matter what handset you use, if the network coverage/reliability/clarity isn't good, it's the weakest link. I've talked to many iPhone users and every one says two things; 1)the network is great in major metropolitan areas and along interstates, and 2) as soon as you get away from those areas, the service quality drops fast.
If you look at AT&T and Verizon coverage maps, it's pretty obvious that AT&T has a lot of work to do.
