"Most Popular" isn't always "Best"
I know a lot of people who "live" off of their thumb drives. I do it quite a bit myself.

After much experimentation, though, I've concluded that a little extra effort is well-rewarded regarding portable software.

Take a look at Italian-based WinPenPack. It's a feast of freeware and open source portable software. If nothing else, the massive installations provide the groundwork for creating your own monster portable office/security toolkit/web server/email server. Much easier to customize than Portable Apps!

WinPenPack does have one down-side, which is easily overcome. Many of the "portable" apps that come with the various installation builds are not true portable apps, but have been forced to run as portable via a program called X-Launcher. What this means is that the problem of constant writing to the flash drive is a possible side effect. I was able to find truly portable alternatives to just about every program they used X-Launcher to run, though.

So trust me, if you are serious about running a portable office or toolbox, do the legwork. Read about it in my own website, here: http://www.crisjolliff.com/portable-freeware-2.html
