RE: "Consider the Logistics...."
You say, "SP1 x32 is 450MB...".

According to Microsoft, it will probably be LESS for those who have already have Vista fairly well up-to-date. The update via Automatic Updates only installs the portions each individual installation needs, not the entire package (unless Microsoft has been lying to us all these years, which I sincerely doubt.)

While I'm certain that many will opt to download the entire Network Installer, many more will not, so your estimate is kind of overly-high as to the amount of bandwidth which will be required by Microsoft. Many will also opt to purchase an installation Disk for the price of shipping and handling (usually around $10).

You also say, "...RTM's require rampup to get to you...".

I agree. It does take time to produce the Gold Masters and ship them around the world (maybe a few weeks at most, though). Microsoft has told us that they do not intend to release the Bits to the General Public until sometime in March (or later?). This has absolutely NOTHING to do with logistics. It would take no more than 8 hours or so to put the bits up on their server farms, not 2 or more months.

Excuses, excuses, excuses. They simply DON'T want the General Public to have it now. PERIOD. Why? Simple: EACH disk containing the complete bits instantly becomes, for all intents and purposes, ANOTHER "gold master", which Microsoft DOESN"T want us to have yet, because of their long-time paranoia about "casual copying". THEY want to have as much control over their OS's distribution as they can. I don't really blame them in this, either.

I could care less what a Microsoft apologist says about it. They just don't trust us!!! Whether that is good or bad, I guess depends on the amount of patience one has. Cause we are gonna HAVE to wait a little longer, whether we want to, or not.
