The "meat" is in the package!
Since I updated Feisty to Gutsy yesterday I'll try to answer some of your complaints.
First, Xubuntu, the version I have, has a display icon just like Windows that allows me to select from a dozen or so resolutions with a time out that automatically switches it back if you select an unsupported resolution just like XP.
It seems to me that in the year or so that I have been playing with Ubuntu, I have had no issue with the fonts since they are all adjustable. Firefox fonts are adjustable inside firefox's tools/options tab.
The package manager usually gives you a list of dependencies that must be installed to make a particular package work. Gnome is the essential part of many packages based upon Gnome. I have never had the package manager uninstall Gnome as requirement to uninstall a dependent package. Gnome can be installed separately.
I have been around long enough to have wasted a lot of time, money and effort trying out stuff that didn't work. I promise you that Ubuntu is everything Adrian claims and more.
With security becoming a greater issue, I have decided to limit internet connectivity to one linux machine on my network. For the last 6 months this machine has been running Xubuntu. I am very satisfied with the results.
