Of course Linus Torvalds used Lion's Commentary (Unix v6) to make a reverse engineered unix after seeing Minnix, so the timeline should go back to the Unixes (unices?) which lead us to BSD derivatives BSDLite derivations like Apple's OS X and.....

It isn't the number of distros so much as Linux is by programmers for programmers and if you've got a bug fix it yourself and copyleft it to the "community".

Microsoft aims their programs at the user not the OS coder (yeah, so a lot of MS programmers would prefer to use Linux). Check out their usability testing, that looks for novices and information workers to test desktop software. An IT guy might think Vista is clunky but end users go ga-ga over it.
