Yes, too many
Consider: Windows Vista has four versions available in the States: Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate. Windows XP, still available in most office supply stores, adds two more: Home and Professional. People have a hard enough time choosing among just those six.

If you look at the chart referenced in the article, it shows seven "primary" distributions. At the other end of the same chart, it shows nearly three dozen active distributions... and that's an obsolete chart! The current chart shows over 90 active distributions, and even that's incomplete (some special-purpose distros, like Knoppix-STD and Freesco, are not listed).

And... that's not even counting the myriad of variations of BSD!

I'm using Linux (Ubuntu 7.04)... but... there's a part of me constantly wondering if there's something "better" for my needs. Most people can't handle that.

Yes, it's about choice. But with so many to choose from, most people don't want to deal with the "stress" of choosing and maintaining the distro.
