What ubuntu were you using?
if you want any kind of program you have to know the name of the specific program you want.
What do you mean by that? How can you ever install an application without knowing the name? Even on windows you can't just type in something like 'office suite' and get one installed. You either have to download an installer or get a CD.

to download any program you want you must download it in peices!
What application do you need to download in pieces? I haven't spotted any. Have you discovered the Synaptic Package manager yet. It is very useful as it lists a load of applications in categories which you can just select and it will download and install them for you. This is GUI not command line. Some things do need command line to get installed but a lot of common things don't.
