Used Kubuntu to fetch the windoze drivers

Yesterday I was pulling some cables for a customer. He was replacing a MSFT workstation because it had become too infected to use, and replacing the whole machine was quicker than trying to delouse it again.

He caught my attention when the new workstation couldn't get on the net (the Wizard picked the wrong driver for his NIC) to get the drivers for his printer and video card. 800x600 VGA, ycch!

So we booted Kubuntu, which got on the net automatically. CUPS offered us five drivers for that printer and we chose the "recommended" one, and printed the printer test page to verify there wasn't anything wrong with the printer. Then we used Konqueror to go find the three missing Windows drivers and leave them on his Windows desktop where he could finish his Windows install.

What's that you were saying about drivers?

Next, one of his users had stored a ton of messages in Pegasus Mail, a commercial program which has been abandoned by its author. Outlook couldn't make any sense of Pegasus' mail store. They're just binmail files; I guess Outlook didn't recognize the filenames. I convinced him to try Thunderbird. We zipped up the PMAIL directory and unpacked it on the office's Debian bastion host. I delivered them through Postfix' "sendmail" to his POP3 box there and Thunderbird pulled them in. It was easier than trying to convert them on the Windows box with its lack of text handling utilities.
