Drivers? Bah!
My own experience is that if you're using eth, very few, if any, lan cards need additional drivers other than what's included. If you use WiFi, DEFINITELY find out before-hand if your hardware is supported. If you have any questions, just google the chipset along with the term "linux" or "ubuntu" and you will more'n'likely find out that someone has had the same problem, if at all, and fixed it. Also just downloading the livecd and trying it out beforehand allows you to test most of your hardware for pre-compatibility before you install.

Also, just as a generality for the modem support, the easiest way is to get a non-winmodem/softmodem modem. One that has the controller on board. Winmodems do have SOME support, but it's not exactly an easy task to get them running. See < http://www.linmodems.org/ >.
