There are TONS of wonderful applications out there for *nix. Several CAD design progs (like BricsCAD), and some cnc programming apps (LinuxCNC), are out there...just do a search for "cad for linux" or "cnc for linux" and you'll find information on them quite easily.

Linux has come a LONG way in being average-user friendly, but I think that most average users became so intimidated by the old versions they really aren't willing to take another look.

But, when it all comes down to it...once you've at least looked at the newer linux software(s) to judge it(them), use what you are more comfortable with, and what you understand the best.
