- Must learn balance?

I can't speak for the respondee, but I don't visit Slashdot. It is OK for reading some diverse and occasionally interesting tech headlines, but otherwise boring. I was not aware of their anti-anti-Linux policy. My goodness, how OSism runs rampant.
No, I can't say that I've ever made a response to an anti-Microsoft post like I have here. Likewise, I don't recall making any low blows about any OS. I hardly ever make comments as it is, regardless of the site. But even if I did, could I use the same kind of "then don't use it"-type of comment for someone that dislikes Windows? I can't, because Linux doesn't do everything that Windows can, as you have pointed out. There are people that can't get away and possibly even more that don't know they can or wouldn't know how. On the contrary, I can tell someone that is upset with Linux to uninstall it.
It must have been long ago that I determined that most people who disparage Windows do so because of a feeling of entrapment. I would never assume this was true for all cases. When I first tried Redhat in 1998, I felt frustrated and betrayed. I had payed for it and it did less than Windows 95 and it was difficult to use. It didn't take long to dismiss it as unsuitable for my needs. I was forced to return to Windows, where I could run some needed programs but at the cost of instability and insecurity. I was trapped.
I'm glad that someone kept with Linux though. We need an alternative to at least try every once in a while. Faced with yet another Windows upgrade, I recently looked into Linux again. I was lured into a sense of hope when I had seen how far it had come. Now I am finding out that it still may not do what I want. I can live with that. I don't need to make any comments putting it down because it tried and failed. Nor do I need to rush to a site to cry about how I can't afford Vista. I will simply not use the former and hold off on the latter.
Yes, there are too many people out there that have a cause and aren't happy unless they are angry at something. They are going to make the unsuitable comments to try to drag their target down. That is just plain childish and that is life. You can choose to ignore it or you can dip to their level every once in a while. There isn't a dire need to fill comment threads with empty remarks in an attempt to balance the conversation. - Posted by: Adam S Posted on: 04/16/07 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
