I would have to say
That Linux is heavily built on the Unix design. That research and security favored OS was a government project. Linux used that model, and over 2 decades have been working on getting something to the desktop. Longer than 2 decades cause a lot of the work and design was done pre-Linux kernel. This is not all from scratch.

I've used Unix extensively and I realize it's a very stable environmnent as well. However the patching was heavy and there were too many variants. It killed it from ever getting on the desktop, outside of Apple borrowing BSD code (from government sponsored research again..in other words our families and we, to this day, pay for that research. So, to me, Linux is not free. I've been paying federal taxes for quite some time now.

Windows is a different model. It was designed to be a service driven environment on which you could build powerful applications. They had trouble wtih security, but nobody has disprove the marketshare myth, in fact the only linux product with decent marketshare from Mozilla has not been one w/o many vulnerabilities and bugs. The more it gets used, the more 3rd party apps get built, the less secure it becomes.

Isn't that easy to understand?
