Try MPlayer
Mplayer will reliably play virtually any video or audio format known including DVDs and VCDs. It may not be part of Ubuntu's standard software but it is easy to install. Go to http://www.mplayerhq.hu/ and download the files, compile and install if the Ubuntu repository doesn't have a pre-compiled mplayer.

It comes in a GUI interface or as a command line program, which is very powerful. There's even a command for running the movie upside down if you want to stand on your head while viewing.

Xine is another viewer but far below mplayer.
