Same old paradigm

Damn I like being able to use that word in a sentence.
Now, let's revisit the economic realities that got such short shrift during the dotcom boom, shall we?

If it's a good product, then millions will be diverted from their intended path and will be turned into things like print servers and wireless geek toys. MSFT can't stop people from hacking an X-Box, how are these going to be different?
Subsidy will only serve to drive those who can't get funding out of business, hurting anybody trying to compete in what is no longer a free market economy.

If it's junk (my bet) then it becomes another case of the first world scraping together a few bucks for all da lil brown folks, and providing them with technology they could not give away at home. Then, taking a huge tax write off and throwing gala balls from coast to coast to show their commitment to helping the third world.

Sure, the hundred dollar computer is coming. And it's gonna be about the size of a blackberry, and it ain't gonna be neon green. And the third world can get them for the same hundred bucks and be on the same level technological playing field as the rest of the world.

The OLPC can then take it's place along side of the LISA and Windows ME as ideas that seemed good in theory, but didn't quite make the real world cut.
