I've had one for a few months (on Verizon) and it is a wonderful device. I recently used it during a long train ride. Both my wife and I were able to get online at the same time and both had a fast connection. It is well worth the cost if you are a frequent traveler.
I heard that BestBuy sells something through Virgin Mobile which offers a pay as you go approach. If you don't travel a lot, the pay per use model might be the way to go.
