Hate to give them too much credit, but
OLPC has a lot to do with this. They largely caught the public's imagination with their little XO, despite some ongoing problems with deployment and infighting. They also helped drive some cost savings. At the same time, the turn towards web-based applications means that people are starting to realize that a non-Windows OS isn't a big deal since we just need to get online anyway.

The time is definitely right for these little guys.
