O/S Agnosticism
Browser applications do drive O/S agnosticism, but, there is still a dearth of mobile web applications which compare with the rich functionality of native o/s binary executable/java-based apps.

Developer support for S60 Symbian applications is vastly superior to anything else I have seen.

Even more so, developers are turning to scripting languages with GUI bindings to write code, such as Python for S60 and porting applications is being made obtainable with Open C Posix support.

Nokia's acquisition of Trolltech is no small coincidence.

If Nokia nutures Qt (even GPL!) as I expect they would, expect to see many new novel developments in mobile handset UIs and core/QT (embedded) O/S technology--all without any reliance on web interfaces.
