Launching @Home
Matt,

A couple of comments on your post.

First, I see your point about the early launch issues, but frankly T-Mobile probably did themselves a favor by not going nationwide too early. It let them work out the issues you have mention (battery, handover) on a small group rather than across the country.

I?m sure they are pushing to get this out before the iPhone launch, can you blame them? It will be hard to maintain momentum for anything with iPhone and the summer doldrums.

One thing to note is that the pipeline for UMA devices is very strong. While only two models will be available at launch (both updated versions of the Samsung/Nokia original devices), there are another ten models (including two WinMobile 6 and a RIM) devices scheduled before the end of the year.

Also note the new Samsung model is built on NXP?s 5210 platform which achieves nearly 12 hrs talk time, 250 hrs standby in Wi-Fi. By waiting to launch with these new platforms, T-Mobile is able to take battery performance off the table.

But I must disagree with your comment about relevance. T-Mobile?s @Home service and UMA technology in general is about fixed to mobile substitution, not coverage or seamless mobility.

Today one can add unlimited flat rate calling to their service plan for just $20. This service costs $25 from Vonage. Interestingly, when Cinci Bell launched their UMA service ?HomeRun? this week, they priced it at $10. The trend line is towards zero.

I believe that in short order, unlimited calls from the home over Wi-Fi will be free, just like nights/weekends. Sign up for a $40 or $50 mobile plan, and get Wi-Fi calling for free. The rumor is that T-Mobile may actually price @Home more aggressively, coming in below $20.

T-Mobile's play is to own in-home calling. It looks like they are right on track.
