- MySpace (My cesspool?)
-
My eleven year old grand daughter, who lives with us, had a site created in her name by a so called "friend" of hers, complete with email address, cell phone number, picture, and a statement about herself claiming she was actually 16, requesting that older men contact her.
We went to her friend's home and confronted her, and she admitted it. Her mother was mildly non-plussed that she would do such a thing.
I went onto her site in her (my grand daughter's) name and asked that her account be closed and her space deleted. After numerous attempts to close it, I wrote to MySpace and explained the situation.
They wanted proof of my identity and after receiving it, said that I would have to go back to MySpace on her site and request it be closed. I did that numerous times and it was always going to be closed but each time I saved it and rebooted it always reappeared with everything I had deleted.
I spent almost a month with almost daily emails to officials at MySpace explaining that I wanted it closed, my grand daughter was only eleven, (Their EULA says joiners must be at least 13, but don't request proof, only that by joining you proclaim that you are at least 13) beore they finally begrudgingly closed it. I threatened lawsuits and everything.
These people are the scum of the internet and the adult men lined up to call young girls is amazing. We had to cancel her email and cell phone and went to the post office to request that no mail be delivered to us that didn't have "in care of" us. Be very, very wary of where your child goes on the internet. Without software to protect them, they have access to the same sorts of things adults have, and there are sex offenders just waiting to get an email or cell number. But the MySpaces of the net are the home base for it all.
