- Search and Web search are different

Web Search problem is a monster as compared to "search". There are hundreds of open source libraries (like lucene etc) which would do a pretty good search on a set of documents.
But web (& web search) is a different and monstrous game altogether. on web the issues are of scale, how fast can you crawl, how do you prevent spam - lots and lots of it ... How do you recognize good in this tons of spam..
This small step for microsoft takes them nowhere - may be proves that they are competitive against a high school kid
. I believe msft has the technical capabiltiy to take on goog, but somehow they are not going anywhere .. goog has that 5+ years of headstart which they are consolidating and still going on aggressively. difficult to beat ..
