Both are badly over rated.
As a merchant selling products on the web I studied the various on line purchasing systems and I found both Google and PayPal to be two very poor choices.

First, they are too expensive compared to the competition.

Second as the author points out, there is a disconnect between the customer and myself with these two services trying to be in the middle.

And finally, you never really know what the service fee is going to be as it varies far too much depending upon factors beyond my control.

The far better alternative is to work with your bank and set up a merchant account with them and use their gateway or one of the low cost alternatives found on the internet.

By doing this I got my service and transaction fee down to 2.2% across the board and should there be an issue I am dealing directly with my local bank, not some faceless person a thousand miles away that could care less about my problems.
