Pretty much agree.
I would say there are essentially 3 things going on.

1) People have been promised everything on the web, and email clients having given them a taste for it, but a lot of more complex things (cough, spreadsheets, cough) are clearly lacking.

2) We all knew that HTML/DOM/Javascript and whatever server technology you want was really a very poor development platform, technically. The fact that we've got 10-15 years service out of a document markup format is staggering.

3) Desktop apps often lack the graphical flair of (decent) web apps, and all to often are put together by programmers with seemingly next to know idea what "easy to use" means.

So, along come these RIA platforms, that look like they offer the best of everything: The programmers get powerful tools, there is the discipline to work with designers, and the internet based deployment model, plus the ability to use the local pc's immense power. (WPF actually uses some of those 350 million transistors on your GPU!)

I haven't had this much fun coding in years, and I've never built apps as exciting as I am doing know. I've been waiting for something beyond the HTML model, and now its here, I'm going to seize it with both hands.
