I never thought i'd say this, but disagree.
Yeah and No, Richness obviously has its strong point (iPhone clearly states that UX is something we humans adore) yet at the same time, it's more to do with context. You could have an AJAX driven concept with mediocre UX but addresses a specific pain-point and still succeed vs a RIA solution.

I've (i'm sure you have) seen a lot of RIA apps that are way to rich, and lost sight of the context of what the end-user is looking for. Attention economy is more to do with a give/take scenario, if i give you x what are you going to give me in terms of currency for y.

RIA can help facilitate this, but it's not a base level requirement.

Exhibit A: You're blog here on ZDNet. I get a distilled version of RIA in terms of industry perspective (you do the hard yards and hunt for these style articles and comment on them) now in exchange for your hard work, i'll read it and add it to my RSS feed list - thus you derive an income from views.
