Maybe they don't want to
Apple derives the vast majority of its sales from hardware. Of the apps that it does make, only a few (mainly in video) are categorized in the ?pro? area. Apple really cannot go into every promising software area. They have to pick and choose.

There are many software markets that Apple has chosen to avoid. A few years ago they could have picked up Corel for next to nothing. That would have given them a very good office suite and some fine graphics apps. They chose not to.

Apple and Adobe seem to have had a love-hate relationship for years. A high percentage of Adobe?s customers use macs. A high percentage of Apple?s customers use Adobe stuff. The only area that Apple has chosen to really compete with Adobe has been in video. When Apple introduced pdf creation into the OS, they only gave users a very rudimentary function; not even in the ballpark with Acrobat.

Both Adobe and Apple have to worry about the big bad wolf to their north. Apple has chosen to compete with OM on the OS level. Adobe competes in the application area. Maybe they both feel most comfortable in those areas. Since the Adobe RIA offering seem to be completely platform agnostic it would seem that Apple could benefit just as much by selling computers to users who then use the Adobe stuff to make the RIAs.
