I think the key is Browser Integration of Java to cache programs locally,
and automatically update them when there is a new version. The other key is off-line use and how that will work. Will there be a mini-webserver in Firefox to make the off-line part work? How will re-sync work when multiple people modify a document while off-line?

And, they need to figure out how to reduce the size of Java. The runtime for Java is about 15 MB compared to a little over 9 MB for all of Firefox. That is a very doable download on broadband, but still too heavy to include in every FireFox download.

Sun should get together with the FireFox team and others to design a lightweight version of Java for browsers (web applications). Like they have versions for cell phones, how about a version of Java just for browsers? And, you can bet that Google would devote a team of developers to this as well. If they could get it down to a few MB, it might be doable to distribute with all copies of FireFox. Then things get interesting . . . .

They need to strip out everything you do NOT need for Java in a browser,  DonnieBoy | 11/13/06

The size of the run-time is only 15 MB, NOT 50 MB. Yes, still too big, but  DonnieBoy | 11/13/06
Maybe the time has come for Java. Before, the problem was download time and  DonnieBoy | 11/13/06
