Trying to build a cathedral out of bamboo
Quite frankly, the debate between AJAX and RIAs is akin to the debate between procedural languages and OOP languages. No one would seriously contend that sophisticated apps can be done in AJAX, anymore than someone would seriously claim that sophisticated apps can be done in procedural languages. The bottom line is that for Internet apps to significantly progress, AJAX / the browser have to be bypassed.
Also is just a matter of time before lightweight frameworks (e.g. flash, WPF/E) become extremely popular for creating low end Internet applications.

People demand more and more sophisticated apps. The only way you can satisfy them is by taking an RIA approach.
