For Microsoft, this depends very heavily on their properties, which makes good business sense. For Adobe, the idea is to be as open as possible with their platform and let developers do whatever they want. I think there is room for both

Nope. Microsoft's whole business is predicated on Highlander -- and if you look at the "Five Pillars of Microsoft" you see that there's no room in it for alternatives. Either you bow five times a day towards Redmond or you don't belong.

Adobe, on the other hand, still hasn't figured that part out. They're planning a strategy build on being totally dependent on Microsoft but allowed to survive. Rivers in Egypt come to mind.
