It's extremely useful--to a point
Very useful to the extent that it gives a surprisingly deep and thorough investigation of a topic, based on the opinion(s) of one person or a very small group of people.

For many topics, that good enough. Most people will agree that the moon is made up of certain minerals of so-and-so percentages, and not of green cheese.

For other topics, opinions vary wildly. Some people think Obama is Messiah returned to earth. I personally think he's way out of his element and a Svengali. Whoever controls the Obama topic on Wikipedia gets to say what he wants.

At least with an encyclopedia you are pretty sure that the people writing on topics are extremely well-educated. Not so with Wiki.
