Separation is Key
I don't think Facebook is an appropriate medium for schools to communicate with students/parents/faculty. One of the issues that comes up in our household frequently is the separation of personal and professional life on Facebook, i.e., I am not "friends" with any of my professional acquaintances on Facebook. Not that I do anything too "off the wall," but it's nice to know that I can vent after a bad day at work, and not worry about the repercussions. I think the same issues would come up if schools use Facebook to communicate. What if a teacher/student talks about a bad day, or something else along those lines? Seeing as post-Columbine, schools are super-sensitive to rantings of students, no matter how crazy they may be, I can see all sorts of issues that would arise from this.

Now, that being said, I can see the use of a government run, centrally managed networking site that would facilitate this sort of interaction.
