Adding a couple of peripherals helps a lot
As you said, adding a cheap LCD monitor when needed really amps up the usefulness of a netbook. I plug one in when I have big jobs, and use it in dual monitor mode to have tons of screen real estate to work with.

I also prefer using a small, cheap USB mouse to using the cursor touchpad on my netbook. A personal choice, perhaps, but it adds very little cost and does not restrict the computer's portability.

I use my netbook every day for many tasks, then throw it in my briefcase to carry it everywhere.
