Just switched to a netbook desktop PC combination
Toshiba had the same problem with its power connections. My Jan 08 Satellite L40-17U, which my wife now uses, has its power connection at the back also. My wife likes to watch movies while sitting in bed... which results in me every day reminding her that the entire laptop is resting on the power connector.

I just switched from using a 15.4" laptop for everything to using two computers: an MSI Wind U100 Plus netbook (now with Win7 RC) for on the way, with two batteries, and - in a while - a desktop computer to replace the big laptop (I'm not that rich that I can buy 4 new computers in an 18-month period).

I noticed that using a laptop in the house is especially problematic. It's sitting on the table with the power cord on the ground, someone trips over the cable, and wham - broken leg and broken laptop (luckily, in this case, only the latter).

As of now, I'm switching to a high-performance desktop PC and a small but relatively high-end netbook (this one comes with the Intel N280, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB disk, two batteries for 8 hours, running Win7 and equipped with 3G (UMTS) for real connectivity.

This week I'm going to figure out a way to efficiently synchronize my files to both devices, perhaps by setting up an automatic synchronization somehow, or by switching to Google Docs for all of my word-processing tasks, using an FTP server on my main PC (currently the 15.4" laptop) to host my files, or some other location. Microsoft's new Skydrive offer sounds nice, but it has some limitations, such as a 30 MB file size limit and needing to upload and download files separately. There are also real OS-integrated drop-and-drag online backup programs (I considered one of them, forgot the name), but I'm hesitant, since I realize just how deep these programs can enter my OS and basically do whatever they want there. If Google or even Microsoft were to offer such a service, I would probably use it, since in all honesty, the big names have a name to protect.
