But for use outside education?
I'm interested in an e-reader because I like to read books on my train commute, or even just at home, and an e-reader would fit better in my purse than a netbook (it would be lighter too!).

I know I want an ebook reader. I know you, Chris, think that netbooks are the ideal way to go for an all-in-one solution, but if you HAD to pick an e-reader, which one would you choose? Is the Cool-er a good way to go? I'm really wary of the Kindle because of the DRM and the fact that it doesn't read pdfs, so Amazon is a no-go for me. Is the Cool-er the best alternate option, you think?
