Long query research tool
The latest data shows that longer queries are the fastest growing segment for search, which indicates that more research is being done through public search engines like Google versus paid search like LexisNexis, Thomson Reuters, etc.

The biggest challenge is that Google is not built to handle longer queries and would require a major architecture change in order to achieve results that are helpful to researchers. Traffic to Google scholar has been dropping double-digit year of year due to the fact that their approach to search doesn't work with longer queries. If you attempt a longer query, such as several sentences, the results typically only return results from books versus journal articles.

There are several new search engines that are working their way through the masses. One is called DeepDyve and is touting itself as Search for Research. Hope Leman at AltSearchEngines did a review of DeepDyve last week and found that DeepDyve really delivers when using the content as the query where others have promised it but fell well short in terms of execution. They are smaller, as are the others who are doing similar work, but DeepDyve is really making it interesting given the vast amount of information they have already indexed.

Longer search queries, where the content is the query, are the way of the future. If I could click on an article, a twitter or quote from facebook and ask for it to show me more like this - and have it really work - that would be the approach ideal for all hand held devices where typing isn't as easy.
