- Better with Google?
-
I have worked with a lot of this data to write my PhD. The issue is not the organization of data - if you actually visit the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Census Bureau or the Nataion Bureau of Economic research you will find surprisingly well organized access to the data.
What makes the data difficult is understanding it. Aside from the Decenial Census and the Census of Manufacturers (among other census projects) much of the intervening Federal data is based in sampling, including the current population survey which is used to assess employment and unemployment levels at both naitonal and local levels. For example did you know that someone who does not have a job and is NOT actively searching for a job is NOT counted as unemployed? At least a rudimentary understanding of the collection methods and categorical definitions is required to really understand the data and turn it into useful information.
Therfore I would recommend that students go straight to the source rather than assume the data is somehow better just 'cause Google reorganized it. - Posted by: bhaydama Posted on: 05/01/09 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
