- As an Educational Computer Technician...
-
I work for a school district with nearly the same issue. Unfortunately, you've pretty much gone through most of your options.
The only recommendations I can make to improve speed and usage for lower grade levels is adequate support from both the tech and teacher in helping students get their laptops to their desk and running properly. Perhaps the tech can carry over 3-5 laptops at a time to desks and hand them out to the students while the teacher gives each group instructions to open the laptop and press the power button and such. Allowing the entire class to get a laptop, and THEN instructing them, takes a lot longer than it seems. The larger the group, the less focused they will be, slowing down the process as they chat amongst each other. Doing this in groups (even if they come up to the cart in groups of 5 or so) keeps the overall process clean and smooth.
It is simply fact that most students in lower grade levels are very much beginners in technology, and it WILL take them a little (or a lot) longer, no matter what. Try talking to your principal about extending the computer time for lower grade levels. 15 extra minutes does wonders for students, as it goes directly into usage time, and not setup/take-down time. - Posted by: MikeTheTech Posted on: 02/25/09 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
