You should perhaps start giving away pencils and teach writting
Ok, I overstepped a little in the title, but the underlying idea that we don't need to stack low cost computers in all room corners ad in all students pockets is still a valid one.

The valid question is the need. This will define both the requirements and the budget. If you require students to have access to productivity software to produce long documents, then netbooks is perhaps not the solution because you cannot use 5mm keys to type long documents, because you cannot use 9" screens to view source document and to produce text at the same time, because you cannot use 1Gb configurations to have different important software running at the same time ( try spreadsheet, presentation/word processing plus a couple of browsers windows with serious switch between apps and copy paste ).

high margin netbooks as produced by major brands may perhaps eliminate the performance/scale issues but not the size one.

Netbooks are originally for itinerant users with UMTS access. kind of an iphone alternative. in that context they are not tiny, they are huge, but definitely not for students
