Theres definately an element of lazyness to it all
To reuse the car example, ABS, traction control, automatic gear box, Snow mode etc are all additions that continue to pull the user further away from the reality that they are actually driving a car. This causes less understanding of how a car operates, adds more components that when broken aren't easy to fix and for people with better driving experience can be frustrating.

I feel the same goes for computers. The more you take away from a user, the less they understand and the more that a high end user will be frustrated by lack of options.
