It's called job security
I am also a tech guy that goes out of my way to fix
things around the office. When I started, they did not
have a position for IT support. I started as an admin
assistant with the company and slowly began fixing
things. More and more things were given to me to
fix, because I have the background for it, and as
senior staff left the company that did it before I got
here there is now a great number of things that I am
the only one that has done it for the past five years.

They are all so accustomed to me doing it that they
are very resistant to learn any of the tasks I do. In
this job market, even if they wanted to fire me, they
could probably manage, but they are so afraid of what
they don't know, that my job is safe. It helps that
every time I go on vacation, somebody finds some magic
new way of screwing something up that makes them panic
until I return. I realize this makes me evil to some
extent, but I have come to terms with that.
