I'm in a similar position...
...for a fair few years I've been resident computer problem fixer / teacher for my family.

However my family do seem to be receptive (apart from my older sister who refuses to take any advice especially in regards to upgrading her browser) to help & learning.

I have found the best approach is to sit with them spelling out what they need to do, letting them do it, and making their own notes on the steps. This I have found has stopped me from using techy jargon like "Address Bar" (granted its not really jargon, but it is to my mum) & stopped me missing out seemingly obvious steps that I do automatically.

So for me spoon feeding has worked well until I can get them to the point where they can self-diagonse & solve issues with Google. If this fails then I usually LogMeIn.com it to their computer & fix.
