Summary

Learn about antivirus utilities available for the Mac OS.
Products Affected

Consumer Software, Mac OS

Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult. Here are some available antivirus utilities:

* Intego VirusBarrier X5, available from the Apple Online Store
License: commercial

* Symantec Norton Anti-Virus 11 for Macintosh, available from the Apple Online Store
License: commercial

* McAfee VirusScan for Mac
License: commercial

His reply:

"I'm currently running Leopard on my machines and use Norton Antivirus Corporate as it is site licensed here and free to all faculty, staff and students. Generally speaking I tell most of my clients that that risk surface is relatively small with OS-X but it is getting larger with time. So I view installing antivirus software as optional but recommended. I use it more to prevent me from receiving a message that is laden with a virus that could possibly get forwarded to someone with a Windows machine and more exposure."

This coming from someone who lives and breathes both Windows and Mac.

Are the chances of Linux getting a virus any better? An interesting question ripe for debate.

In a nutshell: The chances are far less, being open source.

Thanks Chris.
