Canada isn't as bad.....
I'm a Canadian living in a rural area... my home has
high speed cable.

According to http://www.internetworldstats.com/am/ca.htm
Canada is a world leader in broadband penetration. We
have 85% broadband penetration, and yet we have more
rural areas...

I wonder, what is it that Canada is doing different
from the US that allows us to have so much more
internet access?
