The end of your own article points out why the Classmate isn't doing much in the US market:

Dell, Asus, MSI, HP, Lenovo, and any other of the many netbook makers out there.

The Classmate has to compete with the Mini 9, Eee, Wind, Mini 1000's of the world and outside of a rugged build it isn't much different than the many other netbooks out there. It also doesn't look nearly as sleek as say the Mini 9 from Dell or Mini 1000 from HP. Sex sells... even in netbook form factor.
