telecommuting skills?
I'm a fulltime telecommuter, though I do venture out to teach an IRL composition class a couple of days a week. I think the kids already have the skills they need to telecommute, and they value having the connection between the classroom and that new work environment made evident.
Many of my students send me their assignments by email (the time stamp has to be before midnight or it's counted late), and I mark them up with edit panes and send them back.
Next week, they're posting their assigned book reviews at Amazon.com. Next month, we're going to work on Wikipedia (our state's endangered species articles are just stumps, so we're doing a good deed).
I post information for them online, and they can do the same for one another. I also give them credit when they submit essays to student essay contests, as long as they copy me on their submissions.
In class, we can look things up on cell phones or dash to the computer lab to pull items up from our school email accounts.
I'm not saying these are revolutionary ideas, just that they're comfortable and easy for me because this is how I normally work. None of these things requires any great outlay for equipment or any more tech training than I already expect to do. We also save paper -- I think I have the lowest photocopy expenditure in the department.
The future is here.
